All work with lasers and optical sources (such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems) is subject to the Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010 and other regulations made under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

In the healthcare sector, the regulation of Class 3B/4 lasers and IPL systems varies across the UK. In general, regulators look for evidence that users are following the guidance published by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). This guidance advises that users seek expert advice from a certificated Laser Protection Adviser (LPA).
