Overview

PHE is the UK's primary authority carrying out research to advance knowledge about protection from the risks of radiation. In addition we’ve been integral in establishing world leading laser radiation safety standards.

Our courses are taught to a high standard. Learning is further supported by comprehensively equipped training venues and printed course information. Course activities include case studies, practical measurement and assessment exercises, workshops, group tutorials and daily review questions, as well as a visit to Loughborough University's high power laser laboratory. Everything is done to give students a detailed understanding and competency in the skills being taught. The course is examined and certificated.

This five-day course, which is run in conjunction with Loughborough University, is fully residential and includes all meals and accommodation from dinner on the Sunday evening prior to the course to lunch on the Friday afternoon of the final day. The Burleigh Springs Leisure Complex, with indoor swimming pool, sauna, spa, gym and skin care and therapy centre is also available to students. Ample free car parking is provided.

 

Course programme options

Each course is tailored to the interests of the course participants. A pre-attendance questionnaire is sent to students for completion and return prior to the course, the course is designed for:

  • Laser Safety Officers and others responsible for dealing with changing or complex laser applications
  • Managers, supervisors and others responsible for laser safety
  • Those with responsibility for providing training in the safe use of lasers
  • Laser manufacturers and suppliers who require an understanding of applicable laser safety standards
  • Trainee Laser Protection Advisers (successful completion of the course may provide adequate evidence of the knowledge aspects for Certification)

  • Introduction to laser risk assessment
  • Laser application model (workshop)
  • Safety issues from lasers and the beam delivery system

Day 2

  • Safety issues from the laser process, environment and people
  • Safety issues from an application (workshop)
  • Laboratory tour
  • Laser beam hazards
  • Laser classification

Day 3

  • Putting numbers to laser beam hazards
  • Calculating Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) levels
  • Laser beam measurements

Day 4

  • Practical measurement exercises
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Administrative controls

Day 5

  • Review and revision
  • Feedback and course review
  • Written test
