Who is the course aimed at?

This is a radiation safety course for anyone working with sealed radioactive sources or X-ray generators; these are commonly used in level and thickness gauging, bore-hole logging, security inspection, food screening, laboratory X-ray analytical studies and for "Positive Materials Identification" (PMI).

  • Participants do not need any prior knowledge of radiation safety to benefit from this course.
  • This course is not appropriate for industrial X or gamma radiographers; please contact us for details if you are interested in this topic.

    What is the course about?

    This course is about restricting radiation exposure during work with sealed radioactive sources and X-rays, why this is important and how it can be achieved in practice. The course provides an overview of the key legal requirements affecting the worker or operator, and enables the participant to develop appropriate skills such as detecting and evaluating the radiation hazard.

     

    What are the benefits of the course?

    The learning outcomes for this course are that on completion, those attending will :

  • Understand the nature of X-rays and radioactivity and be able to use the associated terminology
  • Understand the risk associated with radiation exposure, and why exposures must be kept "as low as reasonably practicable" (ALARP)
  • Understand how to undertake their work in line with the ALARP principle
  • Understand the need to read, and work in accordance with, the employer's local rules, and keep the relevant records up to date
  • Know what actions to take in the event of reasonably foreseeable incidents

    Course overview

    The programme runs over a full day and comprises interactive talks and group work. Presenters are selected from our pool of specialists and advisers, all of whom are familiar with the variety of work areas where sealed sources and X-ray generators are used.
