Who is this course aimed at?

This is a course for anyone appointed to the role of Radiation Protection Supervisor, responsible for supervising compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 in workplaces affected by radon gas.

What is the course about?

This is a radiation safety course, providing the requisite training for anyone supervising compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 in radiation controlled and supervised areas, designated on the basis of a radon atmosphere. Topics covered include the nature of radon gas, health effects of exposure, radon measurement, radon risk assessment, dose evaluation, and the restriction of exposure through ventilation, access restriction and systems of work.

Throughout the course the practical means by which employers can comply with the regulatory requirements are discussed.

What are the benefits of this course?

Those attending this course will:

  • understand the nature and properties of radon, and the units used to quantify exposure;
  • know the risks associated with radon gas and understand why exposure to it must be restricted so far as is reasonably practicable;
  • understand the relevance and content of a radon risk assessment;
  • be aware of how exposure can be restricted using engineered solutions (eg ventilation) or administrative controls (eg access restriction) and understand how each of these must be managed.
  • be able to supervise compliance with the relevant requirements of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017
  • understand what is required in the role of Radiation Protection Supervisor, including steps to take in the event of an incident
  • know how and when to seek further advice.
