Who is this course aimed at?

This course is for those appointed to the role of Radiation Protection Supervisor. Those attending should have a working knowledge of the equipment to be supervised, although no prior knowledge of radiation safety is assumed.

 

What is the course about?

This course teaches the basic principles of radiation protection in relation to all standard industrial uses of ionising radiation: Sealed radioactive sources, unsealed (open) radioactive material, and x-ray generators.

 

What do I get out of this course?

Attending this course, you will:

  • Gain an insight into the various types of ionising radiations; their nature and properties;
  • Become familiar with terminology used in radiation protection;
  • Understand why it is important to keep radiation exposure 'as low as reasonably practicable' and how this can be achieved in practice;
  • Find out about the relevant requirements of legislation governing:
    • Occupational exposure to radiation;
    • Keeping radioactive material
    • The accumulation and disposal of radioactive waste
    • The security and other requirements for High Activity Sealed Sources
    • The transport of radioactive material
  • Understand how the principles of radiation protection can be put into practice to achieve a good standard of radiation safety in the workplace;
  • Learn good working practice such as effective use of radiation monitors, and dealing with emergencies;
  • Know what is required of those taking on the role of Radiation Protection Supervisor

 

Course overview

The programme covers the necessary legal and practical requirements and runs over three full days (face to face) or five shorter days (on-line). The teaching is engaging and interactive, with relevant practical and group exercises to ensure the subject matter can be applied in practice. Speakers are selected from our pool of specialists and advisers, who are happy to answer questions throughout the course.

There is an optional written assessment at the end of the course.
